Brooklyn College Spent $107K To Castrate Their Logo

Back in 2009, Brooklyn College's logo, was, well, look! [giggles and punches nearest girl in her shoulder]. But according to the Post, president Karen Gould fixed the "phallic" symbol soon after she took office, paying a marketing firm $107,000 for the image makeover.

The old logo was designed about 10 years ago by the college?s in-house design studio that, a former college employee said, was fully staffed and could have easily created a new logo. ?She had a whole creative-services area at her beck and call,? the employee said of Gould. One professor couldn?t wait for the revised logo.

?Can you send me a copy of the new Brooklyn College logo? We want to make a Women?s Studies banner, and want to use the not-so-phallic logo,? Barbara Winslow, an associate professor in the School of Education, wrote in a December 2009 e-mail to the college communications department obtained by The Post.

A spokesperson for Brooklyn College told the tabloid that no public funds or tuition money went into the costs for the new logo.

The Post was likely keeping this story warm to fuel the grist of outrage against Gould's recent stand to maintain academic freedom, but you can't argue with the craftsmanship: how did Neustadt Creative Marketing come up with this paradigm-shattering masterpiece?

Microsoft Windows 8 Fail: Now What?

On October 26, 2012, Microsoft (MSFT) launched its Windows 8 operating system. At the time, the Microsoft marketing machine ran at full throttle to hype the first Windows upgrade to hit shelves in three years. According to Steve Ranger, ZDNet, and a host of overzealous technology writers, the Windows 8 launch event was set to be "revolutionary," and the "biggest reinvention ever" at Microsoft. Microsoft engineers designed the Windows 8 platform to bridge usage gaps separating desktop, tablet, and smart phone interfaces. As the backbone of an entire ecosystem, the Windows 8 event arrived in conjunction with the Surface tablet and Nokia (NOK) Lumia line up of smart phone launches.

On July 22, 2013, Matt Baxter-Reynolds and the same ZDNet online magazine opined upon "the death of the PC," as Windows 8 had then failed to energize its core business. This failure, of course, does extend over the Windows phone. At this junction in time, both Microsoft and Nokia shares are strong sells. Going forward, neither company will be able to productively build upon Windows 8 - through updates. The Windows 8 event may serve as proof that Microsoft is effectively a utility serving a declining PC market. Coca Cola (KO) and Altria (MO) are better options - for investors opting to mine healthy amounts of free cash flow paid out as regular dividends. The Microsoft business model serves little to no purpose as part of a diversified investment portfolio.

Windows 8 Updates

Windows 8 is notable for its touch screen, tile interface that is typically associated with smart phones and tablets. Windows 8 represents the first major attempt to effectively consolidate smart phone, tablet, and desktop computer interfaces beneath one umbrella. As part of this horizontal integration, Microsoft also eliminated its traditional Start menu, in a move that came largely to the dismay of long-time users. This Windows 8 strategy stands in direct contrast to The Apple Way, which calls for specialized software for each major platform. Detractor Kevin Williams blasted Microsoft's recent shift as "arrogant, heavy handed, and out of touch with user needs." In many circles, Windows 8 has been compared to New Coke, which was also a misguided attempt to sweeten a classic brand.

Windows 8 is now taking the fall for the declining PC market. Many corporations are apparently making decisions to maintain old machines, running Windows 7, or even Vista, instead of upgrading to Windows 8. According to research firm New Market Share data, Windows 8 license sales lag far beyond those of Vista - through the first eight months of both product life cycles. Recently, research firm Gartner issued a report highlighting the collapse of PC sales in Western Europe. Western Europe, as a bellwether for the industrialized world, is slogging through a 20% year-over-year decline in PC sales volume, for a total of 10.9 million units sold during Q2 2013. The Western Europe consumer PC market has especially collapsed behind a 26% sales drop throughout the same period. Meike Escherich, Gartner research analyst, rationalizes that sales have declined sharply largely in anticipation of new Intel chips and Windows 8.1. Still, Escherich notes that Windows 8.1 "will not fully compensate for the ongoing PC decline."

Neither Windows 8.1, nor the inevitable Windows 9, for that matter will turn back the slow motion train wreck of the PC market. The consumer is quickly transitioning to tablet and smart phone devices, while Chinese firm Lenovo effectively dumps cheap hardware onto the market. Taken further, The Windows Phone cannot deliver this ecosystem to growth while the PC market deteriorates as a commodity. The Nokia Lumia 1020 and its lauded 41-megapixel camera will change nothing.

I'm a Mac. I'm a PC.

Apple's (AAPL) timeless "Get a Mac" campaign still defines the consumer electronics market. In a series of commercials, airing between 2006 and 2009, Apple personifies itself as a fashionable, yet eager to please hipster. Alternatively, the John Hodgman character as Microsoft is a technocrat, or office park relic in a tweed suit, who demands help simply to stay out of his own way. Taken together, Nokia and Microsoft are still remnants of 1990's suburban office park culture. On Wall Street, these two companies are losing goodwill. On Main Street, Nokia and Wall Street are far from cool.

On August 7, 2013, research firm comScore released its June 2013 U.S. smart phone subscriber market share report. The report presents averages of statistical data spanning the three-month period between March 2013 and June 2013. A quick review of the comScore tables does reflect the presence of a smartphone duopoly largely controlled by Google Android and Apple iOS. Taken together, this operating system duopoly now powers 92% of U.S. smart phone subscriptions. On the handset side of the ledger, Apple and Samsung are a respective one and two atop this chart, as original equipment makers. Each wing of the Apple iOS - Google Android duopoly expanded market share above the prior quarter. At the bottom of the heap, Windows is barely relevant to this smart market with its meager 3% share. Investors must recognize the Windows 8 failure is the locus of control behind deteriorating PC and smart phone sales in this ecosystem. In terms of real growth, the damage is irreparable.

The Bottom Line

On July 18, 2013, Microsoft released its fourth quarter and annual results for fiscal year 2013 ended June 30, 2013. For the quarter, Microsoft reported $5 billion in net income on $20 billion in revenue. These tallies do include $900 million worth of Surface RT tablet inventory write offs. Wall Street clearly was not impressed, as traders immediately dumped Microsoft stock to $31.40 - for a 13% loss on the following trading session. Windows 8 has now been thoroughly dismissed as a failure.

Microsoft shows no signs of altering its bread and butter playbook. Microsoft is effectively a utility that monopolizes its particular niche. Instead of achieving steady bottom line growth, Microsoft will simply mint robust, yet stable cash flow through software licensing to PC original equipment makers. Investors, of course, are well aware that the PC is now a cheap commodity, where growth is nonexistent. Again, PC sales are likely to continue their sharp decline through the near future.

On June 19, 2013, The Wall Street Journal reported that "people familiar with the matter" claimed that Microsoft was in "advanced talks" to purchase Nokia. The deal making allegedly broke down over Microsoft's refusal to pay a significant premium above Nokia's $15 billion in market capitalization. The Nokia - Microsoft alliance will further erode shareholder value, until these two former 90's growth engines agree to move on and part ways. The possibility of Nokia entertaining Google - Android executives and customers may serve as a catalyst to finally inspire real competition and growth at Microsoft. For now, however, both Microsoft and Nokia are strong sells.

Dear Lillie: A Little Update and The Samsung Galaxy Note 8

*A few outtakes from our first unsuccessful attempt of a shot with Lillie, Lola and Everly

I didn't mean to go so many days without blogging. The good news is the reason I haven't blogged is because I have barely touched my computer in days because I've been so busy painting and hanging light fixtures and working like crazy on our new house. I finally started taking some photos with my real camera this week so starting tomorrow I will be blogging with some of the changes. I took some full room shots of our den/study which is the one room that is more or less finished for now. I need to go through and edit those, though, so first I am just going to show you some of the smaller details like some of the doors painted, shelves in our kitchen and the new sconces in our family room because I am still waiting on a few more small things to finish up in that main kitchen/family room space before I photograph the full shots and show you the full space before and afters. And I also will do a post on painting kitchen cabinets (I used a different approach as well as different paint for my cabinets than I did for Jason's and will do the pros and cons of each) and then of course I still have the photos of my parent's kitchen and Jason's kitchen too to finish going through and editing. And we also made great progress on Lillie and Lola's bedroom this week. It took me two nights and one afternoon of painting to get all of the dark trim nice and white and then we had a wonderful lady come put up the wallpaper on their back wall yesterday morning. It is so fun and colorful. Way out of my normal comfort zone but the girls absolutely love it so it was worth it. I just need to hang some curtains and do a few other projects and then I can photograph it. Then it's on to either the dining room or powder room. I haven't decided yet. I am planning on taking the night off from painting tonight, though, so I can spend it getting a bunch of blog posts ready for the coming week!

Now, onto the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.? A lovely woman from Staples contacted us a couple of months ago about doing a product review. I was a little unsure at first because we try to not do a whole lot of reviews but I actually was quite interested in trying this out so I decided to go for it! It arrived the day we moved in to our new house so I left it safe in it's box for the first week or two just so that there was no chance it would get lost or broken in all of the crazy shuffle. Then once we got settled in I opened it up. It is such a great little tablet! I LOVE the size of it! It's got a much bigger sizes screen than my iPhone so it's a million times easier to browse the web and catch up on e-mails but because it's smaller than an iPad it's a lot easier to carry around and store in little spots. I also love the way it looks.

I love the keyboard too! It has a full keyboard with all the numbers too which I like so much better than switching back and forth between the letters and numbers. Samsung has pretty much thought of everything on this tablet! It actually has something called "Smart Stay" that will keep the screen on as long as you are looking at it. You don't need to set a timer. It also has great handwriting recognition and can turn the words that you write out with the S Pen into text that can be added into e-mails or notes. The S Pen comes with the tablet and has a great little slot it fits into you don't have to worry about losing it when you are using it (which is a nice little feature for absent-minded people like myself!)

There are a million more things it can do but I haven't had time to even begin to check them all out. I have been loving using it though for browsing the internet and Lillie can navigate her way around on it in two seconds - she has been loving looking at all of the Halloween costumes on the Chasing Fireflies site and trying to decide what she is going to be and she's also taken it upon herself to help Jamie find the perfect costume for Evie's first Halloween. =)

Mike & Trista - CrossFit East Decatur - A CrossFit Affiliate exercise ...

? Announcing Game Day Ready ? Training for the Sport of Fitness with Azadeh Boroumand & Shana Alverson |

Mike & Trista

?It?s not too often that you find a couple that displays the type of work ethic that you see in Trista and Mike. Seeing where they came from and the time and effort that they CHOSE to put in, makes me very proud as a coach. They?ve made their fitness a priority which is rare in this day and age, and to know that they are also raising 4 small children?their dedication is awe inspiring. It would be so easy for them to make excuses and let life, finances, busy after school schedules get in their way. Instead, they?ve gotten their children involved and are undoubtedly passing along the same work ethic?which is just fuckin? awesome on so many levels.??Coach Damon

If there was a poster of what CFED represents, this family would be front and center. So this is the deal; if you haven?t heard of or seen a photo of Mike, Trista or their 4 gorgeous children then it?s quite possible that you?re not a real member of CFED. It wouldn?t be an exaggeration to say that they?re some of our favorite people to photograph. But the truth is they?re just some of our favorite people.

Mike and Trista met eons ago in a far away region called the Midwest, Kansas to be exact. As if it?s not enough that they have been together since high school; this basically means that they?ve been together longer than they?ve been apart.

Mike ?Schuck?enbrock is the type of guy that you can?t help but love. A devoted family man, his love for Trista and their family is palpable. He shows up, works hard, accepts (and seeks) criticism well, encourages everyone all of the time and his humility is genuine but don?t be fooled; ?Schuck? is also crazy competitive. Often times seen dueling with Jimmy both on the board and Facebook, these guys provide some of the healthiest, most competitive and encouraging fodder for even the most removed CFED member. His commitment to improving his form and technique has made Mike one of the strongest men at CFED as well. A great guy with an awesome sense of humor and the tightest shoulders EVER, Mike makes me smile everytime I see him. Coach Duda, who most often sees Schuck says ?I like his approach to workouts: mental preparation (gets a little quiet before a WOD) and he always tries to push it a little further every time. He is very kind and brings a lot of good energy to the classes that he works out in. I am very happy I can coach him as much as I do?. He?s not so bad on the eyes either (My words, not Duda?s).

I?m going to label Trista as the Sweetheart of CFED, the CFED Homecoming Queen if you will. From her interactions with Mike and their family and her completely relatable personality to her work ethic and total badassery during WODs, it?s easy to see why everyone who meets her is often awestruck. With four babies people, FOUR? Will, Maggie, Cait, and Ella?- It?s totally possible to see Mike or Trista without another member of their family, but not likely. What?s awesome about Trista is that she can go from Mom-mode to WODbot and back in less than :04 (see what I did there)! She came to CFED after the birth of their 4th child Ella and after taking some time off to focus on the family, has come back with a vengeance (See the photo on 06.14.13)! This is clear, as one member unabashedly stated ?Damn, Trista is HOT?! DUH.

In addition to being competitive within CFED, Mike and Trista are also extremely competitive with and supportive of each other which, I?m sure, makes for as much fun at home as it does in the gym. As Coach Lauren says ?Schuck and Trista came to CFED put their head down, did the work (in the gym and the kitchen) and have become badass athletes, parents and CFED community members. They are proof that even with 4 kids (yes 4 and one of them is under 2 years old) you AND your spouse can find time to get to the gym, eat well and both have a badass bodies?. WORD UP Coach!

Throughout the last year and a half, I?ve had the pleasure of spending extensive time with Mike, Trista, and 3 of the ?Little Schucks? and honestly, the hype is well-deserved. Their commitment to both health and fitness has trickled down to their little ones who participate in the CFEDKids program and it?s obvious that they are breeding Mini ?SchuckBots?. I don?t know about anybody else but, that doesn?t seem so bad. Here?s a little taste of their awesomeness:

1. How do you manage to get into the gym 4-5 days a week with responsibilities and a large family?

CrossFit is an absolute priority. Fitness and healthy eating have become a normal way of life for our household, so getting to the gym is just a part of how we live. Other people ask how we ?find? time to get to the gym ? we didn?t find it, we have to make it. If that means that the house is a little dirty or that we aren?t up to date on the latest tv shows, so be it. Plus, Mike really likes his nooner group and he gets really grumpy if he doesn?t get into the gym at least four times a week.

2.What?s the biggest change you have seen in your lives from CrossFit?

Mike: Confidence. I regained a confidence I haven?t had in a long time. This isn?t just about how I look or feel, but also my own sense of what I can do. I?ve regained a work ethic and natural confidence that I lost somewhere in my 20s. ?Trista: The lexicon ? we speak differently in our household and even our youngest ones understand the gym and Paleo-speak. Also, the community ? we have added some wonderful friends to our lives that we might not have otherwise had the opportunity to meet. It?s our version of ?Cheers?. I guess that makes me Carla.

3. Which of your kids is most likely to make it to The Games?

Maggie has one hell of a squat, Will is going to be tall and strong and is already great at box jumps. Cait is fast and is great at moving her body around on rings and the bar. But the ultimate answer is Ella. No doubt. That kid is just fierce.

4. How long do you think it?s going to be before Ella gets her toes to the rings?

Her biggest obstacle right now is the pudgy baby belly. Once the mood suits her, it?s all over.

Congrats Mike & Trista, we?re proud to have you at CFED!!

How Close Are We to Elysium-Style Exosuits?

Matt Damon's latest film, Elysium, is set 140 years in the future where society is divided between the elites, who live in a utopian orbital society, and the rest of us, who struggle in squalor down on the planet's surface. To combat this inequality, an unsung hero installs himself into a full-body prosthetic and breaks into the "most secure place in the universe." Must be one hell of a suit.
