Brooklyn College Spent $107K To Castrate Their Logo

Back in 2009, Brooklyn College's logo, was, well, look! [giggles and punches nearest girl in her shoulder]. But according to the Post, president Karen Gould fixed the "phallic" symbol soon after she took office, paying a marketing firm $107,000 for the image makeover.

The old logo was designed about 10 years ago by the college?s in-house design studio that, a former college employee said, was fully staffed and could have easily created a new logo. ?She had a whole creative-services area at her beck and call,? the employee said of Gould. One professor couldn?t wait for the revised logo.

?Can you send me a copy of the new Brooklyn College logo? We want to make a Women?s Studies banner, and want to use the not-so-phallic logo,? Barbara Winslow, an associate professor in the School of Education, wrote in a December 2009 e-mail to the college communications department obtained by The Post.

A spokesperson for Brooklyn College told the tabloid that no public funds or tuition money went into the costs for the new logo.

The Post was likely keeping this story warm to fuel the grist of outrage against Gould's recent stand to maintain academic freedom, but you can't argue with the craftsmanship: how did Neustadt Creative Marketing come up with this paradigm-shattering masterpiece?

Microsoft Windows 8 Fail: Now What?

On October 26, 2012, Microsoft (MSFT) launched its Windows 8 operating system. At the time, the Microsoft marketing machine ran at full throttle to hype the first Windows upgrade to hit shelves in three years. According to Steve Ranger, ZDNet, and a host of overzealous technology writers, the Windows 8 launch event was set to be "revolutionary," and the "biggest reinvention ever" at Microsoft. Microsoft engineers designed the Windows 8 platform to bridge usage gaps separating desktop, tablet, and smart phone interfaces. As the backbone of an entire ecosystem, the Windows 8 event arrived in conjunction with the Surface tablet and Nokia (NOK) Lumia line up of smart phone launches.

On July 22, 2013, Matt Baxter-Reynolds and the same ZDNet online magazine opined upon "the death of the PC," as Windows 8 had then failed to energize its core business. This failure, of course, does extend over the Windows phone. At this junction in time, both Microsoft and Nokia shares are strong sells. Going forward, neither company will be able to productively build upon Windows 8 - through updates. The Windows 8 event may serve as proof that Microsoft is effectively a utility serving a declining PC market. Coca Cola (KO) and Altria (MO) are better options - for investors opting to mine healthy amounts of free cash flow paid out as regular dividends. The Microsoft business model serves little to no purpose as part of a diversified investment portfolio.

Windows 8 Updates

Windows 8 is notable for its touch screen, tile interface that is typically associated with smart phones and tablets. Windows 8 represents the first major attempt to effectively consolidate smart phone, tablet, and desktop computer interfaces beneath one umbrella. As part of this horizontal integration, Microsoft also eliminated its traditional Start menu, in a move that came largely to the dismay of long-time users. This Windows 8 strategy stands in direct contrast to The Apple Way, which calls for specialized software for each major platform. Detractor Kevin Williams blasted Microsoft's recent shift as "arrogant, heavy handed, and out of touch with user needs." In many circles, Windows 8 has been compared to New Coke, which was also a misguided attempt to sweeten a classic brand.

Windows 8 is now taking the fall for the declining PC market. Many corporations are apparently making decisions to maintain old machines, running Windows 7, or even Vista, instead of upgrading to Windows 8. According to research firm New Market Share data, Windows 8 license sales lag far beyond those of Vista - through the first eight months of both product life cycles. Recently, research firm Gartner issued a report highlighting the collapse of PC sales in Western Europe. Western Europe, as a bellwether for the industrialized world, is slogging through a 20% year-over-year decline in PC sales volume, for a total of 10.9 million units sold during Q2 2013. The Western Europe consumer PC market has especially collapsed behind a 26% sales drop throughout the same period. Meike Escherich, Gartner research analyst, rationalizes that sales have declined sharply largely in anticipation of new Intel chips and Windows 8.1. Still, Escherich notes that Windows 8.1 "will not fully compensate for the ongoing PC decline."

Neither Windows 8.1, nor the inevitable Windows 9, for that matter will turn back the slow motion train wreck of the PC market. The consumer is quickly transitioning to tablet and smart phone devices, while Chinese firm Lenovo effectively dumps cheap hardware onto the market. Taken further, The Windows Phone cannot deliver this ecosystem to growth while the PC market deteriorates as a commodity. The Nokia Lumia 1020 and its lauded 41-megapixel camera will change nothing.

I'm a Mac. I'm a PC.

Apple's (AAPL) timeless "Get a Mac" campaign still defines the consumer electronics market. In a series of commercials, airing between 2006 and 2009, Apple personifies itself as a fashionable, yet eager to please hipster. Alternatively, the John Hodgman character as Microsoft is a technocrat, or office park relic in a tweed suit, who demands help simply to stay out of his own way. Taken together, Nokia and Microsoft are still remnants of 1990's suburban office park culture. On Wall Street, these two companies are losing goodwill. On Main Street, Nokia and Wall Street are far from cool.

On August 7, 2013, research firm comScore released its June 2013 U.S. smart phone subscriber market share report. The report presents averages of statistical data spanning the three-month period between March 2013 and June 2013. A quick review of the comScore tables does reflect the presence of a smartphone duopoly largely controlled by Google Android and Apple iOS. Taken together, this operating system duopoly now powers 92% of U.S. smart phone subscriptions. On the handset side of the ledger, Apple and Samsung are a respective one and two atop this chart, as original equipment makers. Each wing of the Apple iOS - Google Android duopoly expanded market share above the prior quarter. At the bottom of the heap, Windows is barely relevant to this smart market with its meager 3% share. Investors must recognize the Windows 8 failure is the locus of control behind deteriorating PC and smart phone sales in this ecosystem. In terms of real growth, the damage is irreparable.

The Bottom Line

On July 18, 2013, Microsoft released its fourth quarter and annual results for fiscal year 2013 ended June 30, 2013. For the quarter, Microsoft reported $5 billion in net income on $20 billion in revenue. These tallies do include $900 million worth of Surface RT tablet inventory write offs. Wall Street clearly was not impressed, as traders immediately dumped Microsoft stock to $31.40 - for a 13% loss on the following trading session. Windows 8 has now been thoroughly dismissed as a failure.

Microsoft shows no signs of altering its bread and butter playbook. Microsoft is effectively a utility that monopolizes its particular niche. Instead of achieving steady bottom line growth, Microsoft will simply mint robust, yet stable cash flow through software licensing to PC original equipment makers. Investors, of course, are well aware that the PC is now a cheap commodity, where growth is nonexistent. Again, PC sales are likely to continue their sharp decline through the near future.

On June 19, 2013, The Wall Street Journal reported that "people familiar with the matter" claimed that Microsoft was in "advanced talks" to purchase Nokia. The deal making allegedly broke down over Microsoft's refusal to pay a significant premium above Nokia's $15 billion in market capitalization. The Nokia - Microsoft alliance will further erode shareholder value, until these two former 90's growth engines agree to move on and part ways. The possibility of Nokia entertaining Google - Android executives and customers may serve as a catalyst to finally inspire real competition and growth at Microsoft. For now, however, both Microsoft and Nokia are strong sells.

Dear Lillie: A Little Update and The Samsung Galaxy Note 8

*A few outtakes from our first unsuccessful attempt of a shot with Lillie, Lola and Everly

I didn't mean to go so many days without blogging. The good news is the reason I haven't blogged is because I have barely touched my computer in days because I've been so busy painting and hanging light fixtures and working like crazy on our new house. I finally started taking some photos with my real camera this week so starting tomorrow I will be blogging with some of the changes. I took some full room shots of our den/study which is the one room that is more or less finished for now. I need to go through and edit those, though, so first I am just going to show you some of the smaller details like some of the doors painted, shelves in our kitchen and the new sconces in our family room because I am still waiting on a few more small things to finish up in that main kitchen/family room space before I photograph the full shots and show you the full space before and afters. And I also will do a post on painting kitchen cabinets (I used a different approach as well as different paint for my cabinets than I did for Jason's and will do the pros and cons of each) and then of course I still have the photos of my parent's kitchen and Jason's kitchen too to finish going through and editing. And we also made great progress on Lillie and Lola's bedroom this week. It took me two nights and one afternoon of painting to get all of the dark trim nice and white and then we had a wonderful lady come put up the wallpaper on their back wall yesterday morning. It is so fun and colorful. Way out of my normal comfort zone but the girls absolutely love it so it was worth it. I just need to hang some curtains and do a few other projects and then I can photograph it. Then it's on to either the dining room or powder room. I haven't decided yet. I am planning on taking the night off from painting tonight, though, so I can spend it getting a bunch of blog posts ready for the coming week!

Now, onto the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.? A lovely woman from Staples contacted us a couple of months ago about doing a product review. I was a little unsure at first because we try to not do a whole lot of reviews but I actually was quite interested in trying this out so I decided to go for it! It arrived the day we moved in to our new house so I left it safe in it's box for the first week or two just so that there was no chance it would get lost or broken in all of the crazy shuffle. Then once we got settled in I opened it up. It is such a great little tablet! I LOVE the size of it! It's got a much bigger sizes screen than my iPhone so it's a million times easier to browse the web and catch up on e-mails but because it's smaller than an iPad it's a lot easier to carry around and store in little spots. I also love the way it looks.

I love the keyboard too! It has a full keyboard with all the numbers too which I like so much better than switching back and forth between the letters and numbers. Samsung has pretty much thought of everything on this tablet! It actually has something called "Smart Stay" that will keep the screen on as long as you are looking at it. You don't need to set a timer. It also has great handwriting recognition and can turn the words that you write out with the S Pen into text that can be added into e-mails or notes. The S Pen comes with the tablet and has a great little slot it fits into you don't have to worry about losing it when you are using it (which is a nice little feature for absent-minded people like myself!)

There are a million more things it can do but I haven't had time to even begin to check them all out. I have been loving using it though for browsing the internet and Lillie can navigate her way around on it in two seconds - she has been loving looking at all of the Halloween costumes on the Chasing Fireflies site and trying to decide what she is going to be and she's also taken it upon herself to help Jamie find the perfect costume for Evie's first Halloween. =)

Mike & Trista - CrossFit East Decatur - A CrossFit Affiliate exercise ...

Mike & Trista

?It?s not too often that you find a couple that displays the type of work ethic that you see in Trista and Mike. Seeing where they came from and the time and effort that they CHOSE to put in, makes me very proud as a coach. They?ve made their fitness a priority which is rare in this day and age, and to know that they are also raising 4 small children?their dedication is awe inspiring. It would be so easy for them to make excuses and let life, finances, busy after school schedules get in their way. Instead, they?ve gotten their children involved and are undoubtedly passing along the same work ethic?which is just fuckin? awesome on so many levels.??Coach Damon

If there was a poster of what CFED represents, this family would be front and center. So this is the deal; if you haven?t heard of or seen a photo of Mike, Trista or their 4 gorgeous children then it?s quite possible that you?re not a real member of CFED. It wouldn?t be an exaggeration to say that they?re some of our favorite people to photograph. But the truth is they?re just some of our favorite people.

Mike and Trista met eons ago in a far away region called the Midwest, Kansas to be exact. As if it?s not enough that they have been together since high school; this basically means that they?ve been together longer than they?ve been apart.

Mike ?Schuck?enbrock is the type of guy that you can?t help but love. A devoted family man, his love for Trista and their family is palpable. He shows up, works hard, accepts (and seeks) criticism well, encourages everyone all of the time and his humility is genuine but don?t be fooled; ?Schuck? is also crazy competitive. Often times seen dueling with Jimmy both on the board and Facebook, these guys provide some of the healthiest, most competitive and encouraging fodder for even the most removed CFED member. His commitment to improving his form and technique has made Mike one of the strongest men at CFED as well. A great guy with an awesome sense of humor and the tightest shoulders EVER, Mike makes me smile everytime I see him. Coach Duda, who most often sees Schuck says ?I like his approach to workouts: mental preparation (gets a little quiet before a WOD) and he always tries to push it a little further every time. He is very kind and brings a lot of good energy to the classes that he works out in. I am very happy I can coach him as much as I do?. He?s not so bad on the eyes either (My words, not Duda?s).

I?m going to label Trista as the Sweetheart of CFED, the CFED Homecoming Queen if you will. From her interactions with Mike and their family and her completely relatable personality to her work ethic and total badassery during WODs, it?s easy to see why everyone who meets her is often awestruck. With four babies people, FOUR? Will, Maggie, Cait, and Ella?- It?s totally possible to see Mike or Trista without another member of their family, but not likely. What?s awesome about Trista is that she can go from Mom-mode to WODbot and back in less than :04 (see what I did there)! She came to CFED after the birth of their 4th child Ella and after taking some time off to focus on the family, has come back with a vengeance (See the photo on 06.14.13)! This is clear, as one member unabashedly stated ?Damn, Trista is HOT?! DUH.

In addition to being competitive within CFED, Mike and Trista are also extremely competitive with and supportive of each other which, I?m sure, makes for as much fun at home as it does in the gym. As Coach Lauren says ?Schuck and Trista came to CFED put their head down, did the work (in the gym and the kitchen) and have become badass athletes, parents and CFED community members. They are proof that even with 4 kids (yes 4 and one of them is under 2 years old) you AND your spouse can find time to get to the gym, eat well and both have a badass bodies?. WORD UP Coach!

Throughout the last year and a half, I?ve had the pleasure of spending extensive time with Mike, Trista, and 3 of the ?Little Schucks? and honestly, the hype is well-deserved. Their commitment to both health and fitness has trickled down to their little ones who participate in the CFEDKids program and it?s obvious that they are breeding Mini ?SchuckBots?. I don?t know about anybody else but, that doesn?t seem so bad. Here?s a little taste of their awesomeness:

1. How do you manage to get into the gym 4-5 days a week with responsibilities and a large family?

CrossFit is an absolute priority. Fitness and healthy eating have become a normal way of life for our household, so getting to the gym is just a part of how we live. Other people ask how we ?find? time to get to the gym ? we didn?t find it, we have to make it. If that means that the house is a little dirty or that we aren?t up to date on the latest tv shows, so be it. Plus, Mike really likes his nooner group and he gets really grumpy if he doesn?t get into the gym at least four times a week.

2.What?s the biggest change you have seen in your lives from CrossFit?

Mike: Confidence. I regained a confidence I haven?t had in a long time. This isn?t just about how I look or feel, but also my own sense of what I can do. I?ve regained a work ethic and natural confidence that I lost somewhere in my 20s. ?Trista: The lexicon ? we speak differently in our household and even our youngest ones understand the gym and Paleo-speak. Also, the community ? we have added some wonderful friends to our lives that we might not have otherwise had the opportunity to meet. It?s our version of ?Cheers?. I guess that makes me Carla.

3. Which of your kids is most likely to make it to The Games?

Maggie has one hell of a squat, Will is going to be tall and strong and is already great at box jumps. Cait is fast and is great at moving her body around on rings and the bar. But the ultimate answer is Ella. No doubt. That kid is just fierce.

4. How long do you think it?s going to be before Ella gets her toes to the rings?

Her biggest obstacle right now is the pudgy baby belly. Once the mood suits her, it?s all over.

Congrats Mike & Trista, we?re proud to have you at CFED!!

How Close Are We to Elysium-Style Exosuits?

Matt Damon's latest film, Elysium, is set 140 years in the future where society is divided between the elites, who live in a utopian orbital society, and the rest of us, who struggle in squalor down on the planet's surface. To combat this inequality, an unsung hero installs himself into a full-body prosthetic and breaks into the "most secure place in the universe." Must be one hell of a suit.

Blame the Moon for Bad Sleep?
by Nicky Broyd, WebMD Health News

Many people complain about poor sleep around the time of a full moon. Now, a study by scientists at the University of Basel in Switzerland offers some of the first convincing evidence to suggest that lunar cycles and people's sleep are connected.

The findings add to evidence that humans, despite the comforts of the modern world, still respond to the rhythms of the moon.

Scientists Closer to Cat Allergy Cure
by Peter Russell, WebMD Health News

July 26, 2013 -- Scientists say they're hopeful that a research breakthrough will lead to a cure for people who are allergic to cats.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge say they've figured out how a particular protein in cat dander triggers an allergic response in humans.

Tech Mishaps Behind 1 in 4 Operating Room Errors
by Robert Preidt, HealthDay Reporter

Surgical equipment checklist could cut errors in half, researchers say

July 25 (HealthDay News) -- About one-fourth of operating room errors are caused by technology and equipment problems, but a preoperative surgical checklist could halve the error rate, a new study says.

Researchers reviewed 28 published studies on operating room errors and found that technology/equipment issues were cited in about 15 percent of malpractice claims. An average of 2.4 errors occurred in each procedure, and technology/equipment issues accounted for 23.5 percent of these errors.

Family History of Cancer May Raise This Risk, Too
by Dennis Thompson, HealthDay Reporter

Large European study looked at people with close relatives who'd been affected

uly 25 (HealthDay News) -- A family history of cancer raises your overall risk of developing cancer, including types of cancer far removed from those suffered by your relatives, according to a new study of 23,000 people.

Doctors have long known that people have an increased risk of developing the same type of cancer as a close relative. In addition, some genetics studies have found that common gene mutations can increase the risk of different types of cancer -- for example, one genetic abnormality can increase risk of both breast and ovarian cancer in women.

Bias Against Obese Graduate School Applicants?
by Robert Preidt, HealthDay Reporter

Applicants of any size fared equally in phone interviews, but bias crept in at face-to-face meetings

July 24 (HealthDay News) -- Add higher education to the list of things obese people might lose out on due to discrimination. A new study finds that being overweight may lower your odds of getting into graduate school.

"The success rate for people who had had no interview or a phone interview was pretty much equal," study author Jacob Burmeister, himself a Ph.D. candidate at Bowling Green State University, said in a university news release.

Statin Use May Reduce Parkinson's Risk, Study Says
by Maureen Salamon, HealthDay Reporter

Stopping cholesterol-lowering drug could raise odds of the disease, researchers suggest

July 24 (HealthDay News) -- Millions of Americans take statins to lower their stroke and heart attack risks, but new research from Taiwan suggests the drug may offer another health benefit: cutting the odds of developing Parkinson's disease.

Analyzing nearly 44,000 patients, scientists found that those who discontinued taking fat-soluble statins such as simvastatin (Zocor) or atorvastatin (Lipitor) were about 58 percent more likely to develop Parkinson's than those who kept taking the drugs.

Bright Lights, Safe Cities
by Robert Preidt, HealthDay Reporter

Risk of death from injuries higher in rural areas of U.S., study finds

July 23 (HealthDay News) -- Americans who live in cities are less likely to die from accidental injuries than those who live in rural areas, a new study says.

The findings challenge the widely held belief that cities are more dangerous places to live than rural areas, according to the researchers.

The study authors analyzed data on all injury deaths across the United States from 1999 to 2006, but did not include deaths from the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, due to their unusual nature.

Many Patients Getting Needless Heart Test, Study Contends
by Steven Reinberg, HealthDay Reporter

Most echocardiograms don't change patients' care, so they're not clinically useful, researchers say

July 22 (HealthDay News) -- Many patients get heart tests called echocardiograms unnecessarily, according to researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Echocardiograms -- noninvasive ultrasound tests that reveal how well the heart is functioning -- are safe, but most patients who get them see no change in treatment. Therefore, they are not clinically useful, the researchers said.

FDA Warns of Sunscreen Spray's Flammability Risk
by Robert Preidt, HealthDay Reporter

Avoid open flames after application, agency advises

July 21 (HealthDay News) -- Certain sunscreen sprays worn close to an open flame may pose a risk of catching fire, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.

The agency said it knows of five incidents in which people wearing sunscreen spray near sources of flame suffered significant burns that required medical treatment. The products involved in these incidents were recalled and should no longer be on store shelves.

However, many other sunscreen spray products contain flammable ingredients, commonly alcohol. The same is true for some other spray products -- including insect repellants and hairsprays -- and even some non-spray sunscreens, the FDA said.

TVs Toppling Onto Tots at Alarming Rate: Study
by Brenda Goodman, HealthDay Reporter

As families own more TVs, tip-overs have doubled, study finds

uly 22 (HealthDay News) -- Falling television sets continue to be a source of serious injuries to young children, a new study shows.

More than 17,000 children are injured each year by TVs, an average of one of these accidents every half hour in the United States.

And injury rates are going up. Over the last 22 years, as the number of households with multiple TVs has doubled, so too have injuries caused by TVs that topple off their stands and crush a child underneath.

Cyclospora Outbreak Sickens More Than 200 People
by WebMD News from HealthDay

More than 200 people in numerous states have become ill with cyclospora infections in an outbreak that began a few weeks ago, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most of the patients first became ill with the foodborne illness between mid-June and early July. Reported cases have occurred in Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Wisconsin and Illinois. At least eight people have been hospitalized.

Cyclospora Infections: Are You at Risk?
by Brenda Goodman, MA, WebMD Health News

July 25, 2013 -- Cyclosporiasis, a stomach bug that's typically picked up from fresh produce, has sickened more than 285 people in 11 states, according to the CDC.

That makes it one of the largest outbreaks of cyclospora infection ever reported. "In recent years we haven't seen a big outbreak like this," says Monica Parise, MD, chief of the parasitic disease branch at the CDC.

Health officials are urgently trying to track down the source of the infection.

Midwest Ticks Show Signs of 'Heartland Virus'
by Randy Dotinga, HealthDay Reporter

Recently discovered disease struck two Missouri farmers

July 22 (HealthDay News) -- While a type of tick-borne disease known as Heartland virus appears to be extremely rare -- only two cases in humans have been reported so far -- a new study finds it is lurking in ticks in northwestern Missouri.

The researchers haven't issued anything other than the usual warnings about avoiding contact with ticks that may harbor disease. Still, "there's another tick-borne pathogen out there to be careful of," said study author Harry Savage, a medical entomologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

MERS Virus Less Infectious Than SARS: Study
by Robert Preidt, HealthDay Reporter

But Middle East respiratory virus has high death rates among people with chronic illnesses

July 26 (HealthDay News) -- Important differences between Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) suggest that MERS won't prove as dangerous as SARS, researchers report.

MERS emerged last year in Saudi Arabia and nearly all cases of infection have been reported there, or in people who were infected with the virus there before traveling to other countries. Between Sept. 1, 2012, and June 15, 2013, there were 47 confirmed cases (46 adults, one child) of MERS infections in Saudi Arabia, according to the report published July 25 in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

Mammogram Recalls at Hospitals vs. Private Practices
by Robert Preidt, HealthDay Reporter

Repeat tests cause anxiety and additional costs for patients

July 24 (HealthDay News) -- Women who underwent mammography screening at a hospital were more likely to be called back for additional testing than those who had mammography at a private practice, a new study found.

Recalls cause anxiety and additional costs for patients and there have been efforts to keep recall rates as low as possible, the researchers said. They added that recall rates are used by the U.S. government as a quality measure for breast cancer screening, and these findings illustrate the limitations of doing so.

Many Women Worry About Sex After Heart Attack
by Amy Norton, HealthDay Reporter

It's a hidden concern that doctors need to discuss more, experts say

July 24 (HealthDay News) -- After a heart attack, women often worry about the safety of having sex again, and many wish their doctors would talk about the issue more.

So finds a study involving interviews with 17 women who'd survived a heart attack in the past two years. The researchers found that while most rekindled their sex lives within a month of the attack, many also remained fearful about how sex could affect their hearts.

Single Men: Higher Risk of Cancer-Linked Oral HPV?
by Amy Norton, HealthDay Reporter

But overall risk is low, and virus usually clears within a year, study found

July 23 (HealthDay News) -- It's rare for men to contract an oral HPV infection, but single men and smokers face a relatively greater risk, a new study suggests.

The study, published online recently in The Lancet, followed more than 1,600 men to chart rates of oral infection with HPV, or human papillomavirus. HPV, which can cause genital and anal warts, is the most commonly transmitted sexual infection in the United States. Some strains of the virus can eventually lead to cancer.

Mercury Exposure and Autistic Behavior: No Link?
by Robert Preidt, HealthDay Reporter

The chemical is often found in fish, prompting many pregnant women to avoid the food

July 23 (HealthDay News) -- Children exposed to low levels of mercury in the womb because their mothers ate large amounts of fish during pregnancy don't appear to be at increased risk for autism, a new study suggests.

Worry that low levels of mercury might affect a child's developing brain has long been a cause for concern, and some experts have suggested that the chemical element may be responsible for behavioral disorders such as autism.

The new findings from more than 30 years of research in the Republic of Seychelles -- a group of islands in the western Indian Ocean -- found no such link, the study authors said.

Common Blood Pressure Drugs May Help Slow Dementia
by Amy Norton, HealthDay Reporter

Larger message: Better cardiovascular health benefits the brain, expert says

July 26 (HealthDay News) -- Older adults with dementia who use certain blood pressure medications may have a slower rate of mental decline, new research suggests.

The study, reported July 25 in BMJ Open, found that dementia patients on particular ACE inhibitors showed a somewhat slower decline in memory and other mental skills than patients not on the drugs.

And dementia patients who were newly started on the drugs had, on average, a small improvement in the first six months.

Some Brain 'Pathways' Possibly Tied to Alzheimer's
by Brenda Goodman, HealthDay Reporter

Findings could point to new drug targets for dementia, although any treatment is still far away

July 24 (HealthDay News) -- Doctors have long known that people with genes that produce a cholesterol transporter molecule called APOE4 are at especially high risk for Alzheimer's disease. Now they think they know why.

Researchers say they've discovered key molecular pathways at work inside brain cells that appear to be altered by the presence of APOE4.

Is 'Sex Addiction' for Real? Study Says Maybe Not
by Robert Preidt, HealthDay Reporter

Brain scans failed to prove that highly sexed people have anything more than strong libidos

July 23 (HealthDay News) -- Sex addiction has often made headlines, with celebrities blaming their romantic foibles on the condition. However, a new study questions the notion that people can truly be "addicted" to sex.

The new study from the University of California, Los Angeles, suggests that self-professed "addicts" may simply have a high sex drive.

Skipping Breakfast a Recipe for Heart Disease: Study
by Dennis Thompson, HealthDay Reporter

Men who miss morning meal much more likely to suffer heart attack, research shows

July 22 (HealthDay News) -- Men who skip breakfast have a 27 percent higher risk of suffering a heart attack or developing heart disease than those who start the day with something in their stomach, according to a new study.

The study confirms earlier findings that have linked eating habits to elevated risk factors for heart disease, the Harvard researchers said.

Skipping Breakfast May Not Lead to Weight Gain
by Denise Mann, HealthDay Reporter

Small study found it did not make college students eat more later in the day, contrary to popular belief

July 26 (HealthDay News) -- Skipping breakfast may not sabotage your waistline after all, a small, new study suggests.

For years, people have been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that missing it would encourage them to eat more later and pack on the pounds as a result.

Now, a study of 24 normal-weight college students suggests that you may actually consume fewer calories if you skip breakfast. The findings are published in the July issue of the journal Physiology and Behavior.

At this point, the device is only a prototype. It's pocket-sized, about 4 inches long, and weighs about 4.5 ounces. It operates on two AA batteries.

Could Red Wine Supplement Block Exercise Benefits?
by Mary Elizabeth Dallas, HealthDay Reporter

In small study, resveratrol undermined gains in blood pressure, cholesterol and aerobic fitness

July 25 (HealthDay News) -- Although some antioxidants may be good, more may not be better. New research suggests that resveratrol, a natural antioxidant found in red grapes and products derived from them -- such as red wine -- could offset the health benefits of exercise in older men.

The study involved 27 healthy but inactive men, all nonsmokers around 65 years old. The University of Copenhagen researchers had the men engage in high-intensity exercise, which included full-body circuit training, for a total of eight weeks.

U.S. awards grant for health services a year after Wisconsin Sikh shooting

By Kevin Murphy

(Reuters) - The U.S. government awarded a $512,000 grant on Friday to fund trauma and mental health services for the Sikh community in southern Wisconsin, nearly a year after a white supremacist killed six Sikh worshippers at a temple near Milwaukee.

The first anniversary of the shootings at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin is Monday. Some experts have suggested that the man who opened fire might have thought the Sikhs were Muslim. The Sikh religion originated in India and is not related to Islam.

Attorney General Eric Holder said in a blog posting that the grant to the Wisconsin state government is meant to pay for mental health and trauma services for those affected by the shootings, including relatives of victims, witnesses and first responders.

A year later, people connected to victims of the shooting are still suffering and can benefit from the financial assistance, said Satpal Kaleka, widow of Satwant Singh Kaleka, the temple's president who died in the shootings.

"It's wonderful," she said of the money.

In June, the U.S. government announced that it would track hate crimes in more detail, including Sikhs in the list of the categories on which it collects statistics. Some Sikh leaders had said in the wake of the shooting that this data was needed to show the extent of such hate crimes.

U.S. gives seal of approval to Egypt's new leaders

By Maggie Fick and Angus MacSwan

CAIRO (Reuters) - Supporters of deposed Egyptian president Mohamed Mursi prepared for confrontation on Friday, and the United States said Egypt's military had been "restoring democracy" when it drove him from office.

Thousands were gathered in two Muslim Brotherhood camps in Cairo, defying warnings from the new army-backed government to abandon their protest or face action from security forces.

At the main Rabaa al-Adawiya camp on Friday morning, young men wearing crash helmets and brandishing sticks mounted a first line of defense behind barricades of sandbags and bricks.

International diplomats, rights groups and Egyptian religious leaders appealed to authorities to avoid bloodshed.

Political sources said there had been intense debate within the cabinet on the wisdom of the security forces taking action.

Almost 300 people have died in political violence since Mursi was overthrown on July 3, including 80 of his supporters shot dead by security forces in a single incident last Saturday.

Mursi, an Islamist who became Egypt's first freely-elected president in June 2011, had faced weeks of street demonstrations against his rule. Many Egyptians were frustrated by his failure to get to grips with social and economic problems and feared he was leading the country towards stricter Islamist control.

He is now being held by the military at a secret location.

The turmoil has left Egypt more polarized than at any time since U.S.-backed autocrat Hosni Mubarak was toppled in 2011.

The new civilian government installed by the military received a boost on Thursday from the United States, which had previously given mixed messages about events in a country that has long been a bulwark of Washington's Middle East policy.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in Pakistan Egypt's army had been "restoring democracy" when it toppled Mursi.

"The military was asked to intervene by millions and millions of people, all of whom were afraid of a descendance into chaos, into violence," he told Pakistan's GEO TV.

"And the military did not take over, to the best of our judgment so - so far."

The United States has avoided calling Mursi's overthrow a "coup" - a move that would have triggered a cut-off in the $1.3 billion of U.S. aid the Egyptian military receives each year.

Kerry has however called on Egypt to respect the right of peaceful protest, including the pro-Mursi rallies.

"AVOID A BLOODBATH"

European Union envoy Bernardino Leon, who is in Cairo trying to defuse tensions, said on Thursday the EU would not easily accept the use of violence to break up the protest camp.

Efforts should be made to reach a political solution by involving moderates on both sides, he said.

Human Rights Watch said the government should halt any plans to disperse the Muslim Brotherhood camp by force.

"To avoid another bloodbath, Egypt's civilian rulers need to ensure the ongoing right of protesters to assemble peacefully, and seek alternatives to a forcible dispersal of the crowds," said Nadim Houry, HRW's deputy Middle East director.

It criticized security forces for using excessive force.

Army spokesman Colonel Ahmed Ali said the military wanted no political role but was acting "to support the Egyptian people in their revolution".

In an interview with Al-Sharq Al-Awsat Pan-Arab newspaper, he said people had the right to demonstrate peacefully.

"But these demonstrations have departed from a peaceful context and tend toward violent acts in many cases," he said.

At Rabaa al-Adawiya, blood from last Saturday's shooting still stained the ground.

"The Interior Ministry is practicing the same oppressive policies of Mubarak," said Soha Osman, 40, a pharmacist from Alexandria, wearing a beige full-face veil.

A group of men chanted "Interior Ministry thugs" and "Leave Sisi, it's your last day," - referring to Armed Forces Chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a prime figure in the overthrow.

"They want to take Islam from the country. It's not about Mursi, they want a secular country and they destroyed him to make people hate the idea of an Islamic state," said another woman, walking with her husband and son toward the sit-in.

The new government's transition plan envisions parliamentary elections in six months, to be followed by a presidential vote.

Senior Muslim Brotherhood leader Essam El-Erian on Friday reiterated the Islamists' position that it would not deal with the new rulers in trying to find a solution.

"What is needed to convince people that democratic institutions are being built is to cancel the bloody, fascist military coup and to eject these fascists ... and to convince the people that they can decide their fate and choose their leaders," he said on his social media page.

(AP) ? July is full-fledged baby season for one Utah family.

Three sisters from Layton gave birth to three baby boys in the month of July, including two who were born about an hour apart, The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1co677m ).

Even in baby-centric Utah, that's pretty remarkable.

The trio says they didn't plan on getting pregnant at the same time. Misti Stokes, 24, said she found out first. Her younger sister, Courtnee Hoffman, 21, later asked her if she had a pregnancy test to spare. It was positive.

The sisters told their older sister, Kristal Turner, 25, then asked if she was sad she wasn't expecting, but she said no ? because she was also pregnant.

Stokes gave birth to her baby, Boston, on July 3. Hoffman had her son, Stryker, early Saturday, and Turner's baby, Mack, was born 65 minutes later in the same hospital.

At one point before the birth, Turner passed her mother in the hallways of the Circle of Life Women's Center, part of the Ogden Regional Medical Center. She was on her way to see Hoffman.

"She's like, 'What are you doing? Are you going to see Courtnee?'" Turner said. "And I'm like, 'No, I'm going to have my baby.'"

The sisters were in rooms across the hall from each other, both feeling bad they couldn't be with the other to provide support. Nurses helped by keeping each up-to-date on the other's contractions and the babies' heart rates.

"We couldn't go really into each other's room very much, but we would send pictures back and forth and text and ask how each other is doing," Hoffman told the Deseret News.

Their mother was bouncing back and forth between the rooms as each went through the stages of labor, said Dr. Darren Housel, who delivered both babies.

The fact that both babies came naturally, rather than being induced, made it even more remarkable, he said. It was something he hadn't seen before in his 20 years as a doctor.

"We are all kind of baffled that such a coincidental thing would occur," Housel said. "Over 5,000 babies, I can safely say that I've never delivered sisters on the same day. It was cool, a fun experience to be part of."

The three sisters say their bond is now stronger than ever.

"It's been fun to go through it together," Hoffman said.

The three baby cousins were together for the first time Tuesday.

"I really think that there's a reason why all three are born together," Turner said. "They are going to have a great support system for each other."

Utah had the highest birth rate in the country in 2009, U.S. Census data shows. Utah had 19.4 births per 1,000 people. The 3-year-old data is the latest available comparing state's birth rates.

Chromecast Review: Google's Simple, Smart, Video Streaming Device

Google?s Chromecast device

Plug and play: Google?s $35 Chromecast device makes it easy to stream online video to your TV.

Sometimes, cheap and simple can be brilliant. Google seems to have figured this out with its latest attempt to bring online content to your TV set?an ordinary looking, pack-of-gum-sized device called Chromecast.

Google introduced the new product last week (see ?Google Launches a Dongle to Bring Online Video to TV?). The $35 gadget is about two inches long and plugs into an HDMI port on the back of newer TVs, enabling them to play online videos from sources like Netflix and Google?s own YouTube, or simply by mirroring the screen of another device.

Knowing Google, Chromecast is just a little piece of a longer play. While plenty of us now have flat-screen TVs containing HDMI ports, few of us watch online content on these TVs. And only 15 percent of people who have Internet-connected TVs are using them to view or listen to online content. So it will be a while until Web-connected TV sets are the standard in homes, and for us to get accustomed to watching Web-based content on them.

In the meantime, Chromecast acts as a Trojan dongle, if you will, to get us consumers accustomed to streaming content?including content from Google?s suite of services?on TVs, and from all sorts of gadgets (including, of course, Android smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks, but also PCs, Macs, iPhones, and iPads).

Google has made much bolder efforts to enter the TV market in the past without much success. Google TV, a streaming set-top box that the company developed with electronics manufacturers and introduced in 2010, never caught on. And remember the Nexus Q, a big, black orb the company unveiled last year that could stream music and video to your TV? Most people don?t, because it was expensive, only truly worked with a handful of Android devices, and only streamed content from a few sources (see ?Review: Google?s Nexus Q?).

After these two disappointments, Chromecast is basically genius. After plugging the device into an HDMI port on the back of my TV, connecting an included power adapter to the device and into a wall outlet, and making sure the TV was set to the proper HDMI input, I downloaded the Chromecast setup software to my PC and the Chromecast controller app to an Android tablet (Mac software is available, but the Chromecast iOS software wasn?t available when I tested the gadget). I also downloaded a Chromecast extension for my PC?s version of Google?s Chrome Web browser.

Once all these installations were completed, I was able to get streaming. Currently, Chromecast works with Netflix, YouTube, and Google Play, and content streamed from Google?s Chrome browser, and Google plans for it to work with more apps (such as Pandora) going forward. You can also stream either a single Chrome browser tab or your whole screen to the Chromecast, enabling you to share all kinds of things like movies and episodes of TV shows on other websites, or photos stored online.

I tried a few different videos on YouTube, including the mandatory hilarious compilation of clips of cats doing funny things, which I played on the TV via a Nexus 7 tablet. While there was a bit of a lag in adjusting the volume and playing and pausing videos from the tablet, overall it worked well. I was also impressed with how easy it was to fast-forward and rewind videos.

I was also happy to see how easy (and ripe for mischief) it was to control the same video stream across multiple devices. For example, I could start watching a video on my laptop, Chromecast it so it played on my TV, then switch over to controlling it from a tablet.

Netflix also worked well from the tablet, where I especially liked a feature that allows the user to see what?s streaming and control playback from the device?s lock screen.

There were some glitches and hiccups. Streaming Netflix from my PC laptop seemed to have a much longer lag time when I tried to do things like pause or play a video; I was also unable to adjust the volume on the TV from my laptop (that may simply be a problem with my laptop).

And a day after I started using the Chromecast, I had problems with my devices recognizing that it existed. I reinstalled the device?s software, which fixed the problem. Presumably, this was a problem that wouldn?t repeat itself, but if it did, it would quickly turn users off the device.

Roku, of course, already has a similar-looking product, the Roku Streaming Stick, but that costs $100 and only works with certain TV sets that are certified as ?Roku ready.? Compared with that, Roku set-top boxes, and even Apple?s fairly popular set-top box, Apple TV, Chromecast just makes more sense. It?s tiny, inexpensive, easy to set up and use, and works with plenty of smartphones, tablets, and computers.

Not surprisingly, the Chromecast is a hit. In the days since its launch, it?s sparked something of a dongle frenzy. It promptly sold out at both Amazon and Best Buy?s website, and is listed as ?ships in 3-4 weeks? on the Google Play website. The demand, both online and off, meant a Netflix promotion tied to the Chromecast purchase (three free months of the online-video and DVD-by-mail service, which effectively cut the price of the gadget down to $11) sold out, too. A colleague has even asked to borrow my review unit?but I?m loath to hand it over until I can buy my own.

Microsoft Office comes to Android, but not tablets

(AP) ? Microsoft is bringing a pared-down version of its Office software to Android phones, but it is keeping the app off Android tablets just as it isn't making a version for iPads.

The company made the software available Wednesday through Google's online Play store. It requires a $100-a-year subscription to Office and won't be sold separately.

The new offering follows the release of an iPhone version in June and brings an Office app to phones running the most widely used operating system on new smartphones.

Like the other mobile versions, the new Android software is designed for lightweight use. For example, you can use it to view and edit an attachment sent by email. But it's not meant to create a complex spreadsheet from scratch.

Microsoft Corp. is trying to make its Office 365 subscription more compelling, without removing an advantage that tablet computers running Microsoft's Windows system have ? the ability to run popular Office programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

"The release of this app shows that we're committed to keep providing additional value for Office 365 subscribers," the company wrote in a blog post. "Office 365 subscribers will now be able to access, view, and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents with Windows Phone, iPhone and Android phones."

Microsoft is pushing subscriptions as a way to get customers to keep paying for a product that was historically sold in a single purchase. The company touts such benefits as the ability to run the package on multiple computers and get updates for free on a regular basis. However, a subscription can be more expensive than buying the package outright for just one or two computers.

Microsoft said it designed Office Mobile for Android phones specifically for the phone's smaller screen, even though many people will prefer editing documents on a tablet's larger screen. The company has a version for iPads and Android tablets, called Office Web Apps, but that runs on a Web browser and requires a constant online connection. The new Android software is an app that gets installed on the phone and can work offline.

With a subscription, customers typically get to use Office on up to 10 devices. Five of them can be Windows or Mac computers or Windows tablets. The other five can be iPhones or Android phones. Windows phones come with Office installed and do not count toward the limit.

In failing to make a version for the iPad, the top-selling tablet computer, Forrester Research analyst J.P. Gownder has estimated that Microsoft is potentially ceding $1.4 billion a year in revenue, based on 10 percent of the 140 million iPad owners paying for a $100 subscription. Gownder said failure to provide it on the iPad or Android tablets gives incentives for users to explore competing offerings such as QuickOffice from Google and iWork from Apple.

Technically, iPad users can download the iPhone version, but it doesn't take advantage of the larger screen, so images and text are fuzzy when blown up. Android tablet owners won't be able to download it at all through the Play store.

The new software requires Android 4.0 or later ? the Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean flavors of Google's operating system. At first, it's available only in the U.S., though Microsoft plans to expand to 117 markets with versions in more than 30 languages.

Microsoft did not announce any plans for BlackBerry phones.
