Nokia once did something in beta labs for Symbian called Situations: An app that can change a lot of settings automatically depending where you are. Once done by GPS this would perfectly fit for NFC as well using cheap NFC tags: Depending where I am or which NFC tag I pass I want my phone to do several things at once, e.g.:
- Put my phone in my jacket: Ringtone volume up, WLAN off.
- Put the phone beside my bed: Airplane mode on, Ringtone up.
- Put the phone on the console of my car: Bluetooth on. Ringtone up
There are more actions, you might find usefull:
- Turn of / off options like WLAN, Bluetooth, Mobile Data, Power saving mode, Skype, Vibration Alarm...
- Send a SMS, Mail, Facebook Chat.
- Make a phone call.
- Open an App. (This is one off the few thing that work already.)
- Change the Volume, Background Color, Tile Color.
And there are more things that could trigger such events:
- NFC tag ( <- favorite)
- Location by GPS or to sace battery life cellular network cell
- TIme or Date (Workday, Night, ...)
- Ambiance awareness: Bright or dark? Loud or quiet?
Now here's the problem: On one hand, WIndows Phone 8 does not come preloaded with this functionality and on the other hand, Windows Phone 8 does not offer enough API's to let third party developers implement such an application (e.g. (de)activate Bluetooth, WLAN or anything else without the interaction of the user). As I think it is unrealistic to hope that this API get implemented soon (because from a energy and security viewpoint there are good reasons not to do so) I ask Microsoft:
Could you implement such a sleek function into Windows Phone 8?
