Texas Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish wants to end a brief run as a power pitcher and get back to his breaking pitches.
Darvish has relied heavily on the fastball in his last two starts, with mixed results. He had 80 fastball ? two- and four-seamers and cutters ? among his 117 pitches against Cincinnati on June 30 and had 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a win. On Saturday, Darvish had 83 fastballs among his 117 pitches against Houston and allowed five runs in six innings in a loss.
?I think I threw too many fastballs,? said Darvish, speaking through an interpreter. ?I?m a breaking-ball pitcher. I should have thrown more breaking balls, not just this outing but the last one, too.?
Washington said the decision is up to Darvish. Washington suggested Darvish was influenced by media reports showing how he had changed his pitching pattern after using fastballs often early in the season.
?If Darvish feels that, I?m along with him,? Washington said. ?I just want him to be who he is because when he is who he is, he?s very effective.?
